Chok Chai Farm

Chok Chai Farm

At Chok Chai Farm there is a large herd of exotic animals called milk cows. It is the largest dairy farm in southeast Asia.

(Recall that milk, until recently, was not frequently drunk, especially in its raw state, in Asia, and that Asians in general have a high rate of lactose intolerance.)

Chok Chai Farm produces what, to us, seems like pretty good milk. It gets shipped all over Thailand (and maybe elsewhere). They feed their cows sunflowers, which they grow right there. Chok Chai Farm was the first of its kind in Thailand.

Thais show a certain fascination with milk cows, dairy farming, cowboy hats, horses, and the lore of the old US west. At Chok Chai Farm these diverse motifs and industries get bundled together in a fun, creative way. As you walk in, they spray you with some sort of anti-bacterial (and who knows what else) agent, then ship you off in tractor-pulled shuttles to a series of attractions that include exhibitions of horsemanship, tractors, pony and horse rides, and so on—including a demonstration of hand milking.

In this picture a guide is talking about the history of Chok Chai Farm. Behind her is the first tractor and first pickup used there, or, I understand, anywhere in Thailand.

I love seeing Thai people in cowboy hats. It's just fun.
