This isn't a bonfire. Rather, it's a baking chicken.
Recipe: Take one chicken, clean it, jam its empty gut onto an empty glass soda pop bottle (the thick, returnable kind preferably). Set the pop bottle upright on the ground with the chicken on top of it. Cover both with a thin metal box that can take heat well enough to be stuck in a fire. Then cover everything with rice stalks left over from threshing. Light the rice stalks, then let them burn down. Cooking time ten or fifteen minutes.
I'm vegetarian, so I can can only relate what I've been told, and what I've been told is that this is a delicious recipe. It's fun for Thais, too, who don't usually have ovens in their houses and therefore don't have any means of roasting a chicken the way we in the United States might.
